Seven Things You Can Do to Protect the Laptop Hard Drive

Computer hard drive is easily damaged, but most of the damage is due to improper operation by users. In fact, if you can do the following seven things, you can reduce the possibility of a hard disk failure, thus reduce the possibility of data loss.

1. Do not cut off the power when hard disk is in action

The regular hard drive spins at 7200 rpm. When reading and writing, the entire disc is in a high-speed spinning state. If the power was cut all of a sudden, the drive will vibrate. The friction between the disc head and disc will result in damage, appearing as Bad Track in Windows. You should shut down the computer after the drive has completed the read and write operations.

2. Prevent vibration.

In the hard drive installation process, be careful to prevent excessive shaking or violent collision with the chassis plate. When the drive is spinning, do not move the hard disk. Otherwise, the collision between the disc head and the disc plate will scratch the surface of the magnetosphere, resulting in damage of the disk.

3. Keep it away from the magnetic field

Keep the drive away from strong magnetic field, such as speakers, phone, radio, etc. Since the data was stored in the form of magnetization in the disk, magnetic field is the killer for hard drive.

4. Reduce intense operation

After prolonged use of an operating system, where the hard disk sector where the system files are stored, will be used intensively, thus increase the likelihood of damage to that sector. You’d better have two or more hard drives in order to avoid the intensive use of a particular sector.

5. Give it time to rest

You work for eight hours a day, so should your drive. It is best not to let the hard drive on for 24 x 7. It is bad for your drive and bad for the environment too.

6. Defragment the hard drive regularly

Frequent read and write operations will result a large number of non-contiguous drive space and drive fragmentations. When drive space is not continuous, the performance of hard drive will be affected. Use the built-in Windows system tools Drive Defragmenter to defragment the drive, and keep it in good shape.

7. Increase the memory size for the computer.

If you use memory intensive software frequently (such as image and video processing), you should increase the memory size to reduce using virtual memory, meaning writing and reading large amount of data to your disk from the memory. If you reach the limit for your memory size, considering buying a new cheap laptop, laptop deals are easy to find nowadays.

A web camera that captures in 3D

Not many of us have thought of the possible prospects of owning a web camera that records videos in 3D could be like. This little bug eyed one can actually do it. It is made up of two cameras that record videos at slightly different angles. These are later combined to create a stereoscopic image. As you would know, 3D movies require users to wear certain glasses that are either cyan or red color. These are provided with the package. The camera has an in-built USB cable. The sad part is that the two sub-cameras (if I may call it that), capture videos at just 15 fps. It also provides with picture-in-picture videos and side-by-side videos. So it’s as good as having two web cameras in one. The ‘Only’ 3D web camera comes with 5 pairs of glasses and costs about $100. The best part is you can now shoot your own 3D film at home.

AMD’s RS880 integrated graphics chip could make netbooks usable

Tired of hearing that your next favorite netbook / nettop is hamstrung with one of those woefully underpowered GMA950 graphics chipsets? Eager to see what all AMD is going to do about it? If The Inquirer is to be believed, an up and coming integrated chipset should elevate the multimedia prowess of low-end machines, as the RS880 would actually be based around the new Radeon HD 4200 core. In theory, at least, this chip would be around 15 percent faster than similar alternatives out there now, giving future netbooks just enough power to churn through 720p video without st, st, stuttering. Needless to say, the suits are refusing to comment on the matter, but we’re definitely holding out hope for this one.

Mushroom Networks announces new wireless “Broadband Bonding” technology

Mushroom Networks has been in the “broadband bonding” business for quite a while now, but we’re guessing they’re going to find a few more fans with their new wireless broadband gear, which promises the fastest cellular-based internet connection to date. Like the company’s previous PortaBella device (pictured above, not exactly to scale), its new rig can combine up to four different cellular data cards into a single high-speed connection, but this one is fully portable (just over a pound) and, perhaps most importantly, it has an optional battery pack that’ll let you be truly mobile with it. That, Mushroom says, makes the device ideal for a whole range of applications that can be a bit tricky with a single modem, like mobile TV broadcasting or temporary offices set up in a disaster area. Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing just yet, but it doesn’t exactly take much guesstimating to figure out that it’s likely not the most cost-effective solution around.

Windows7 is the least expensive os by Microsoft

Microsoft has released many OS versions over the past and it turns out its latest Windows 7 is the least expensive of them all. Most of the Microsoft OS were in the price range of up to $200 with the exception of Vista Home Premium, which touched the $260 mark. Even the pro versions of Windows, starting NT reached a mark of $320 while the Windows 7 versions are still available at $50 for the Home Edition, $100 for the Professional version and $220 for the Ultimate version. Check out the images to check the sticker prices and the adjusted inflation prices for the different OS released by Microsoft and Windows 7 emerges as the undisputed winner with the lowest price.
